Hey everyone,

I’m back.

If you missed last week’s email, it wasn’t because I forgot or burned out. It was because I was on vacation. I took some time off from the screen, the noise, and the constant push to produce. And honestly? It was exactly what I needed.

Now, here’s the thing: I thought about scheduling these emails ahead. After all, isn’t that the smart move? Queue them up, let the algorithm do its thing, and keep the content flowing even when life gets messy. But I realized that doesn’t feel right for this kind of work. Witchcraft, to me, has never been about rigid structures or performing spirituality on a deadline. It’s about presence. It’s about noticing what’s actually happening in your life right now and letting that inform your practice.

So, rather than handing you a pre-written script from two weeks ago, I wanted to write this in the moment, sharing where I am today.

Today is Tuesday, August 18th. We are deep in the thick of summer’s peak. The light is still long, but if you pay attention, you can feel the subtle shift toward autumn beginning. In many traditions, this is the heart of the harvest season, not just the initial excitement of Lammas/Lughnasadh we talked about earlier, but the sustained labor of gathering what has grown.

And that brings me to something I thought about while away: Rest is not the opposite of practice. It is part of the practice.

In our culture, we often treat rest as a reward for productivity, or worse, as a sign of laziness. On our family cruise I saw so many people with laptops out working away in the middle of what should have been fun. But look at the natural world. The earth rests. The moon waxes and wanes. Even in our spiritual traditions, there are the built-in pauses of Sabbaths, fasting periods, and quiet days. These aren’t breaks from the sacred; they are the sacred. They allow us to integrate what we’ve learned, to listen without the static of our own doing, and to remember that we are part of a larger cycle, not just engines of output.

When I was away, I didn’t "do" much in terms of traditional witchy tasks. No big rituals, no complex spellwork. I walked outside. I watched the stars above the ocean, with no moon, a distant storm, and a couple of meteors making their fall to earth. I sat with a a book and did nothing productive. And in that stillness, I felt more connected to the craft than I have in weeks. I remembered that magic isn’t just about casting circles and chanting words; it’s about attunement. It’s about being awake to the world around you.

So, as we navigate this busy stretch of mid-August, with holidays like Raksha Bandhan coming up tomorrow (celebrating the bond of protection between siblings) and World Humanitarian Day reminding us of those who care for others in crisis, I want to invite you to consider your own relationship with rest.

Are you giving yourself permission to stop? Not just physically, but mentally? Are you allowing space for the "in-between" moments where insight often lives?

You don’t need an altar to honor the pause. You don’t need a specific ritual to acknowledge that you, too, are part of the rhythm. Sometimes, the most powerful spell you can cast is simply saying, "I am enough, and I am allowed to rest."

Wherever you are in your own harvest, I hope you find a little room to breathe this week.

Until next time,

Cerissa
